FROM THE DESK OF STEVE HAWKINS
Dear Bronco Hoop Fans,
I trust that this note finds you healthy and happy. Because of your generous support, our Program has been able to continue to improve in many areas. I feel that the single most important part of my job is to help young men develop to the point where they can go out into the world after their Bronco career ends and be equipped to thrive in life after the basketball stops bouncing. In order for this to happen, our student-athletes need to feel that their experience here as a Bronco was a positive one. The first-class experience that we provide our players is the direct result of your financial and emotional support. Our Program will continue to pursue excellence in all areas. To that end, we have to be diligent in fostering improvements in order to stay competitive in attracting the best possible recruits to be a part of our Bronco Basketball Family. Recruiting is the lifeblood of our Program. We need good players to compete at the highest level. As a famous coach once said, “It is impossible to win the Kentucky Derby with a donkey.”
I am ecstatic about the 2023-20 season we have lined up. Our non-conference schedule will challenge us to grow as a team and better prepares us for the grind our Mid-American Conference season always presents. Our non-conference schedule includes challenging games on the road at Oklahoma State, Ole Miss and Michigan State along with tough home contests against Oakland and Youngstown State.
The 2023-20 version of the Broncos will return a strong core of student-athletes as we are bringing back 61 percent of our scoring from last season, which is the second most in the MAC West. We are also welcoming four talented newcomers to the Bronco Basketball Family that will make an impact both on and off the court. This team will again be representatives of our longstanding tradition of excellence on the court and in the classroom. I am confident that this group of student-athletes will compete relentlessly to achieve success, and I believe that we will again be competing for a MAC Championship.
Though my excitement for the upcoming season is palpable, it is also with great pride that I look upon our achievements of the past sixteen seasons during which I have been head coach. We have won eight West Division titles during that time and have won two overall MAC regular season and tournament titles. We have also competed in all four of the post-season tournaments (NCAA, NIT, CIT and CBI).
We have a storied history of achieving in the classroom as well. Our graduation rate is over 95%. Additionally, of the one hundred and eleven players to be named Academic All-MAC/Distinguished Scholar-Athletes in the past fourteen years, twenty-seven of them have been Broncos. Yes, we have had nearly one-fourth of the student-athletes who have received what I believe is the most important honor given by the MAC. We are what a Program is supposed to be: winners both on and off the court.
As we embark upon a new season, our overriding goal continues to be the achievement of excellence. We can only take our program to the next level by having a shared partnership with the Fast Break Club. To help promote our program, we need your voices and enthusiasm at University Arena, as well as in the community. We need your financial assistance to ensure that we have a first-class program that all fans, alumni and recruits will be drawn to. Above all, we need your involvement and continued friendship. It is my hope that you will join us and help us strive to sustain the excellence that our program has achieved.
Fight on!!
Steve Hawkins, Head Men’s Basketball Coach
